Update on Hemangiosarcoma research project

In a previous submission to the SCOA Newsletter, I pledged support on behalf of Saluki Health Research, Inc. for Dr. Modiano's new hemangiosarcoma research project entitled "Genetic Background and the Angiogenic Phenotype in Cancer" that was submitted for consideration to the AKC-Canine Health Foundation.

This grant, while receiving the highest scientific ratings on its worthiness, was not approved for funding by the AKC-CHF in October. They felt that funding it would take a substantial amount of their resources and limit other projects.

I just received this correspondence from Dr. Modiano:

Hi all

Change in plans . . .

Apparently AKC CHF has decided they WILL award our hemangiosarcoma grant "Genetic Background and the Angiogenic Phenotype in Cancer."

They may contact you to inquire about support (I know at least two clubs/Foundations have already committed funds, and we appreciate your unwavering support!)

More details as we move towards a start date. If you wish to start thinking about how you can help us obtain samples, please contact me ASAP and I will have Mitzi start coordinating. Remember, we need fresh tumor samples for this. Blood samples are great to send to Broad for mapping, but they don't help our specific project.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU again!
Jaime

The scientific summary and lay abstract for this project was previous published and can be reviewed at: http://salukihealthresearch.tripod.com.

It is clearly apparent that we need to continue to support cancer studies with samples as well as financially, especially those related to hemangiosarcoma. This will help ensure the future health and welfare of our ancient breed.

I also encourage the SCOA Health and Genetics Committee to recommend supporting this grant through the SCOA's Donor Advisory Fund.
